Is a 1600 SAT score good?

Yes. A 1600 is a strong score on the SAT. It's in the top 1% of recent SAT takers and in the top 1% of all U.S. 11th and 12th graders, by College Board's percentiles. Whether it's good for you depends on your colleges: it's inside or above the middle 50% of enrolled freshmen at 925 of the 925 colleges we track with published SAT ranges.

    Key takeaways

    • A 1600 is above the 75th percentile at every college we track with a published SAT range.
    • At the most selective colleges, a 1600 doesn't make admission likely: those admitting fewer than 15% are a reach for everyone.
    • Alabama's Presidential Elite Scholarship requires a 1600 and a 4.0 GPA, and covers tuition for up to four years.

Where does a 1600 fall short?

Nowhere. A 1600 is the top of the scale and above the 75th percentile at every college we track with a published SAT range, including the two with the highest 75th percentiles, MIT (1520-1570) and Harvard (1510-1580).

A 1600 can't decide an admission at the most selective colleges. Stanford admitted 4% of applicants for Fall 2025 and Harvard 4%, and both read the score as one part of an application. We've written about SAT ranges at Ivy League schools.

Should you send a 1600 to test-optional colleges?

Always, wherever scores are read. A 1600 is above our estimate of the typical SAT of freshmen who enrolled without one at every test-optional college we can estimate, and at test-required colleges you send it anyway.

The exception is a test-blind college: UCLA and Berkeley don't read SAT scores for admission in 2026-27.

Which scholarships does a 1600 earn?

A few awards are set at or near a perfect score. Alabama's Presidential Elite Scholarship requires a 1600 and a 4.0 GPA and covers the value of tuition for up to four years, with first-year housing. Missouri residents with a 1570 or higher receive the Perfect Score Scholarship, which covers tuition and fees plus a $3,500 yearly stipend.

Below those, a 1600 meets every SAT minimum on the grids we track, such as Tennessee's $18,000 a year for out-of-state students with a 4.0. National Merit runs on the PSAT/NMSQT; we track colleges with National Merit scholarships.

Automatic scholarships with an SAT minimum at or below 1600

134 colleges we track publish an automatic merit award with an SAT minimum at or below 1600, including colleges not listed above. Each award's other requirements, usually a GPA, are listed with it, and the college's page has every rule. Largest first.

We sort by score alone, with the same rules as our college pages, because this page doesn't ask for your GPA. SAT ranges are the middle 50% of enrolled freshmen who sent scores, mostly the Fall 2025 entering class, from each college's Common Data Set or the federal College Scorecard. Test policies are for fall 2027. "Send from" is our estimate of the typical SAT of freshmen who enrolled without one. Scholarships come from each college's published policy, linked.

What costs points at a 1600?

There's nothing left to gain on the SAT. A 1600 requires getting all or nearly all scored questions right; each module also includes a few unscored questions, so a miss on one of those doesn't count.

If you're at 1550 and aiming for 1600, the remaining points are almost always slips rather than content: build a checking routine and use leftover module time on the questions you answered fastest. If you already have a 1600, the time is better spent on the rest of your application. We've written about whether a 1600 allows a miss.
