    How National Merit awards work

National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) ranks juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT by their Selection Index. About the top 50,000 are recognized: roughly two thirds become Commended Students, and the rest become Semifinalists, chosen state by state. Most Semifinalists who complete NMSC's application, with a confirming SAT or ACT score, become Finalists in February of senior year.

Colleges reward that standing in two ways. A college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship is paid through NMSC to Finalists who name the college their first choice. Each sponsor sets its award between $500 and $2,000 a year, renewable for up to four years. Where a college doesn't publish its amount, the list shows that range. Many colleges also have their own, often larger, awards for Finalists and sometimes Semifinalists, from a few thousand dollars a year to full tuition or more. This list covers both.

To see where your score stands, use the Selection Index calculator or the PSAT/NMSQT score calculator, and compare with the National Merit cutoffs by state. For aid beyond National Merit, the merit aid calculator estimates what a college might offer you.

    Frequently asked questions

Which colleges give full scholarships to National Merit Finalists?

29 colleges on this list publish a National Merit award of full tuition or more, including Abilene Christian University, Florida Atlantic University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida State University, Gustavus Adolphus College and Iowa State University. Choose "Full tuition or more" above to see them all. Some packages also add housing, stipends or study abroad funds.

Do National Merit Semifinalists get scholarships?

Some colleges award Semifinalists before Finalists are named. 24 colleges here have an award a Semifinalist (or a Commended Student) can get, including Abilene Christian University, Gustavus Adolphus College, Harding University and Liberty University. Choose Semifinalist under "Your standing" to see them.

Do Commended Students get college scholarships?

Rarely. Only 2 colleges on this list have an award for Commended Students: Abilene Christian University and Liberty University. Most National Merit awards go to Finalists.

Do I have to name the college my first choice?

For a college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship, yes: Finalists have to tell NMSC that the college is their first choice by NMSC's spring deadline. Many colleges' own National Merit awards ask for the same step. The notes under each award say what the college requires.

    How current is this list?

We checked each award in October 2026, for students starting college in fall 2027. Amounts and rules change from year to year, so confirm the details on the college's page (linked under each award) before you count on one.
