How PSAT 10 scoring works
Scoring happens in two steps. First you get a raw score for each section, which is just the number of questions you answered correctly. Then College Board converts each raw score to a scaled section score from 160 to 760. The two section scores add up to your total, from 320 to 1520.
Raw scores: every correct answer counts
Reading and Writing has 54 questions and Math has 44. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so a blank is the only guaranteed zero. Curious how much room you have? See how many questions you can miss on the SAT.

Adaptive testing: how module 2 is chosen
The PSAT 10 adapts once per section. Everyone starts with a module 1 of mixed difficulty. How you do there decides whether your module 2 is the harder or the easier version.
The harder module 2 is the only path to the top of the scale. On the easier version, even a perfect module 2 tops out well below the maximum. This calculator caps an easier-route section at 650. For the full picture, read how digital SAT adaptive scoring works.
Module 1 carries extra weight. Careless misses early can lock you out of the harder module 2, so pace yourself to finish module 1 accurately.

Score ranges and scaling
Each test date uses a slightly different conversion, a process called equating, so the same raw score can map to different scaled scores on different forms. That is why College Board's own paper tables give a range, and why this calculator shows one too.

What is a good PSAT 10 score?
The typical 10th grader scores about 890. A 1100 is the 83rd percentile and a 1300 is the 97th.
The PSAT 10 does not qualify you for National Merit. Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade does; estimate that one with the PSAT/NMSQT score calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How is the PSAT 10 scored?
Two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, are each scored from 160 to 760, for a total from 320 to 1520. Each section is adaptive: module 1 decides whether module 2 is harder or easier.
Does the PSAT 10 count for National Merit?
No. Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade enters students into the National Merit Scholarship Program.
How is the PSAT 10 different from the PSAT/NMSQT?
The content, format and score scale are the same. The PSAT 10 is given to 10th graders in the spring; the PSAT/NMSQT is given in the fall and is the National Merit qualifying test for juniors.
What does my PSAT 10 score mean for the SAT?
The PSAT 10 and SAT share one score scale, so a 1100 on the PSAT 10 reflects the same level of skill as an 1100 on the SAT today. Your SAT score will depend on how much you grow before test day.
Is there a penalty for guessing on the PSAT 10?
No. Only correct answers count, so answer every question.
