How PSAT scoring works
Every PSAT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, each with two adaptive modules. Your number of correct answers converts to a scaled section score, and the two sections add up to your total. There's no penalty for wrong answers.

The National Merit Selection Index
National Merit ranks 11th graders by Selection Index: (2 × Reading and Writing + Math) ÷ 10, from 48 to 228. Using your PSAT to preview your SAT
Because the PSATs and the SAT share one scale, your PSAT score is your SAT-level performance today. The difference between your PSAT and your eventual SAT is the growth you build in between. Frequently asked questions
Which PSAT calculator should I use?
Use the one for the test you took. 11th graders taking the fall PSAT/NMSQT should use the PSAT/NMSQT calculator, which also estimates the National Merit Selection Index. 10th graders taking the spring test use the PSAT 10 calculator, and 8th and 9th graders use the PSAT 8/9 calculator.
Are PSAT and SAT scores comparable?
Yes. Every test in the SAT Suite reports on one vertical scale, so the same score reflects the same skill level on the PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10, PSAT/NMSQT and SAT.
Which PSAT counts for National Merit?
Only the PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade. The PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 don't enter students into the National Merit Scholarship Program.
How accurate are these PSAT calculators?
They're estimates. Each is built from College Board's official paper practice-test conversion tables for that test, with Sharp's estimate of how adaptive routing affects your score, and shows a likely range.
